sunny’s psychedelic birthday party

Sweet Sunny Jay is two! I can’t believe she is already two. I wanted to do a colorful, hippy kind of birthday party for her this year.

We had a really yummy taco bar with chicken and Carne Asada. I think I will post the recipes for the chicken, Carne Asada and the guacamole soon because it was so good! The real star of the show was the Smitten Kitchen Corn Salad with Chile and Lime. Sort of like Mexican street corn but easier to eat. I had never made it before so I wasn’t sure if anyone would like it but it was a hit!

I love plain white dishes but I don’t have enough everyday dishes to serve all guests at a party so I usually end up buying decorative paper plates. I always consider buying a set of catering plates but never pull the trigger because I’m too cheap. BUT…I saw these plates from World Market and I am so glad I finally bought some. They look nice with my everyday plates, simple white pretty much goes with everything. A set of 6 dinner plates is only $10 and a set of 6 salad plates only $8! They look great, they are dishwasher safe and I will for sure save money over time.

Crafting and baking are fun for me and that is why I do it. I am sure my 2 year old couldn’t care less about crepe paper garlands and balloon arches. My opinion is if you love to be a little extra go for it and if it’s not your thing buy a cake from Publix and call it a day! I know that my window for being a little over the top is small so I will do it while I can. This year my son didn’t even want a decorated cake. He wanted plain chocolate, no sprinkles, no decorations….plain cake. My older daughter on the other hand has been very clear that she wants a Lamborghini birthday party so my work will be cut out for me come December!

The initial inspiration board for Sunny’s birthday was lots of retro prints. The final look didn’t quite shake out that way but it was still a lot of fun to put together. Scroll all the way to the bottom for sources.
